Cardigan to sponsor a second Syrian family

It is nine months since the first Syrian family arrived to a new life in Cardigan. Fleeing war in Syria they had spent three years among the millions of refugees in Lebanon. Muhanad says ”Then we could not imagine any future for our children, now they have a future again. We are very happy and we say thank you to everyone.”

The children have many friends in school and around their home. They speak better Welsh than English so they and their friends play in Welsh together.  Their father has done work experience with a variety of businesses: a restaurant, cafe, with a carpenter, growing organic vegetables and in a charity shop. Now he has applied to college so that he can improve his practical skills to get a full time job.

Karwan spent a year in Cardigan volunteering for two charities as a translator and attending Coleg Ceredigion where he received a special award for outstanding personal achievement. He came to help us as soon as he got refugee status after fleeing Iraq and a depressing year in a UK dispersal house.  Coleg Ceredigion helped him get into Cardiff University to study his chosen branch of engineering to continue his career back in Iraq, which was his dream. Croeso Teifi, the sponsoring charity gave him a set of barber equipment. He is now working full time as a barber and saving for university.

The fact that the family and Karwen have had such a successful integration is down to the incredible understanding and warmth of people, businesses and institutions in the town. The volunteers of Croeso Teifi deliver and manage the work as a tireless and dedicated team. We also liaise with the Authorities, sit on the public partnership with the statutory bodies and liaise with the Home Office.

A new team are now planning to sponsor a second family. Anyone living in Cardigan who wishes to help should get in touch.  It will take some months as there are practical preparations and permissions to get.

Other towns or villages wishing to form a group to sponsor should get in touch. We can offer a lot of help and guidance.

Croeso Teifi will have a stand at Cardigan Agricultural Show which is on Saturday 4th August. And you will find us at Cardigan Carnival on Saturday August 11th.

Croeso Teifi Update

It seems a long time since our last news update.

The first family arrived in mid-November and are settling in remarkably well. The children started school full time in January, following taster days in December and they are enjoying it.
The family’s father volunteers regularly in a café and elsewhere when he can; the mother volunteers teaching a small group Arabic, once a week. There is room for a few more if you fancy learning this fascinatingly different language*.
Members of the family have been introduced to Tambourine Tots, swimming, karate and football; visits to the wildlife park, a gig in the Cellar Bar, the school Christmas Show. They all took part in the Cardigan Lantern parade, having first made lanterns at Canolfan Byd Bychan.
Croeso Teifi has its AGM, followed by a social event, on March 6th at 7.30 pm in St Mary’s Hall. All Croeso Supporters are welcome.  The formal invite will be emailed later with all the required information.
We are looking forward to starting the process of settling a second family. Some of the team are stepping back for a break [thank you for all your work] so we welcome anyone new wanting to get involved. A second family could settle in Cardigan town or in a nearby community. Most of the funding needed for the second family is in place.

Sponsorship in Wales and the UK.
There are schemes coming to fruition in Aberystwyth, Haverfordwest and many other parts of Wales. A newsletter from one scheme is attached. We receive regular invitations to meetings in London and Cardiff to discuss and share experience. If anyone wants to attend or to be kept informed of these, let Vicky know [*as above]. Otherwise here are some websites and Facebook groups to share updates and information:

Newyddion // News

In mid December, Croeso Teifi held a celebratory party, for the family from Syria, who arrived in late November. The Reverend John Bennett played games with all the children and MP, Ben Lake, blew up the balloons. The family's children sang a song together, doing verses in turn. The family from Narberth came and their 14 year old sang a song he wrote to thank his dad for bringing them here, it was powerful and heartfelt. Cardigan school teachers and county councillors were present, also representatives from the police. There was a very warm atmosphere.

Yng nghanol mis Rhagfyr, cynhaliodd Croeso Teifi barti ddathlu ar gyfer y teulu o Syria, a gyrhaeddodd tua diwedd mis Tachwedd. Chwaraeodd y Parchedig John Bennett gemau gyda'r plant i gyd a chwythodd Ben Lake AS awyr i mewn i’r balwnau. Canodd plant y teulu gân gyda'i gilydd, gan gymryd tro gyda’r penillion. Daeth y teulu o Arberth a chanodd y mab 14 mlwydd oed gân a ysgrifennodd i ddiolch i'w dad am ddod â nhw yma. Roedd yn bwerus ac yn ddiffuant. Roedd athrawon yr ysgol a chynghorwyr sir yn bresennol, a chynrychiolwyr o'r heddlu hefyd. Roedd awyrgylch cynnes iawn yno.

Annwyl Gefnogwyr Croeso Teifi - Dear Croeso Teifi supporters

Dear Croeso Teifi supporters,

This is to update you on what you have achieved:

We now are expecting our first family in a few weeks. They have a home and a minibus to collect them, and the team are busy making appointments for them. We are looking for a second home so that we can progress an application for a second family once we have learned any lessons from the first.
The second application should take very little time compared to the first which has taken 1 year developing support and 1 year as Croeso Teifi.

Thank you for your incredible generosity and support.

Annwyl Gefnogwyr Croeso Teifi,

Anfonaf hwn i roi gwybod ichi ayr hyn rydych wedi'i gyflawni:

Erbyn hyn, rydym yn disgwyl ein teulu cyntaf mewn ychydig wythnosau. Mae ganddynt gartref a bws mini i'w casglu, ac mae'r tîm yn brysur yn gwneud apwyntiadau ar eu cyfer. Rydym yn chwilio am ail gartref fel y gallwn wneud cais am ail deulu unwaith y byddwn wedi dysgu unrhyw wersi o'r teulu cyntaf.
Ni ddylai'r ail gais gymryd fawr o amser o'i gymharu â'r cyntaf sydd wedi cymryd un flwyddyn o ddatblygu cymorth ac un flwyddyn fel Croeso Teifi.

Diolch ichi am eich haelioni a’ch cymorth anhygoel.

Croeso Teifi news

Croeso Teifi is now a CIO, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with its own Trustees.

At times the journey seemed endless, just to get the necessary permissions to meet our modest goal to host a few Syrian families in Cardigan.

In the last days we passed two important milestones. We became a CIO - a charitable incorporated organisation and we got £10,200 in our bank account. Two months ago we had £7,200. Tomorrow we will have nearly £11,000.

This extraordinary growth in money is due to the enthusiasm and generosity of many people, all local or known to us. There have been no grants or crowd funders yet.

So now we have past these milestones, at last the local authority in Ceredigion can arrange a meeting with us, hopefully to give us their approval, which can be followed by approval from the Home Office. The timing? We depend on others whose timing can be unpredictable, but we hope it will be 2-3 months til we get these approvals and can start seeking the right family or families for Cardigan.

To get this far has involved a lot of work - we now have policies of all kinds, we go to lots of training, even as far as London. We had a trauma awareness training today. We found two sympathetic landlords and we have teams with lead coordinators for every aspect of the work, well almost. There are still a few vacancies if you reading this have some time or skill to give: We are all volunteers and there is always danger of exhaustion, a few people tackling each task will make  a great difference.

Email if you can help: info@croesoteifi.org

And we need to reach another financial milestone to host two families.

We need £18,000 in total. More if it's an extended second family.

On Saturday 24th June,  we plan an information coffee morning in a church hall with a little film, this is not to raise funds but to discuss the project, seek ideas for improvements and share our knowledge so far.

If you want to help, please do, but be warned, your enthusiasm can lure you into a lot of work. You may grow skills and knowledge in unexpected areas. You could end up running an auction or meeting with the home office and explaining how they need to do their job, or folding raffle tickets, or learning about mental health, excel or Arabic or listening to the Koran sung in the sunshine.

I am still tired from my late night shift on Saturday where I had to listen to some of the most stunning music in Wales, eat soup, drink wine and do things you wouldn't dare do at a party. [Noson Bara Menyn]

We are part of a wider movement especially in Wales where teams like ours are developing similar schemes in Cardiff, Aberystwyth, Fishguard, Narberth, Haverfordwest. The first community sponsored family in Wales is due in June. They are Kurds, a minority in their country with some great traditions including equality between men and women.

If you're feeling brave or bored or undervalued or generous, come and help us, jump in and swim, the water's bracing but lovely. Do share...

Vicky

Newyddion CROESO TEIFI

Erbyn hyn mae Croeso Teifi yn Sefydliad Corfforedig Elusennol gyda'i Ymddiriedolwyr ei hun!

Ar adegau, mae’r daith yn teimlo’n ddiddiwedd, dim ond i gael y caniatâd angenrheidiol i gyflawni ein nod cymedrol o gynnal ychydig o deuluoedd o Syria yn Aberteifi.

Yn y dyddiau diwethaf rydym wedi pasio dwy garreg filltir bwysig. Daethon ni’n SEC - Sefydliad Elusennol Corfforedig a chyrraedd £10,200 yn ein cyfrif banc. Dau fis yn ôl roedd gennym £7,200. Yfory bydd gennym bron i £11,000.

Mae'r twf ariannol rhyfeddol hwn o ganlyniad i frwdfrydedd a haelioni llawer o bobl, pobl leol i gyd neu yn hysbys i ni. Ni fu unrhyw grantiau na chyllidwyr dorf eto.

Felly, gan ein bod wedi cyrraedd y cerrig milltir hyn, o'r diwedd gall yr awdurdod lleol yng Ngheredigion drefnu cyfarfod gyda ni, a gobeithio cawn eu cymeradwyaeth, ac wedyn gall cymeradwyaeth gan y Swyddfa Gartref ddilyn. A’r amseru? Rydym yn dibynnu ar bobl eraill y gall eu hamseru fod yn anrhagweladwy, ond rydym yn gobeithio y cawn y cymeradwyaethau hyn o fewn 2-3 mis ac wedyn gallwn ddechrau chwilio am y teulu neu deuluoedd iawn ar gyfer Aberteifi.

Mae cyrraedd y pwynt hwn wedi golygu llawer o waith - erbyn hyn mae gennym bolisïau o bob math, rydym yn mynd i lawer o hyfforddiant, weithiau mor bell â Llundain. Cawsom hyfforddiant ymwybyddiaeth trawma heddiw. Gwelsom ddau landlord llawn cydymdeimlad ac mae gennym dimau gyda chydlynwyr arweiniol ar gyfer pob agwedd ar y gwaith, mwy neu lai. Mae ychydig o swyddi gwag o hyd os ydych chi sy’n darllen hwn â rhywfaint o amser neu sgiliau i’w rhoi. Rydym i gyd yn wirfoddolwyr ac mae perygl o flino bob amser: bydd ychydig o bobl i fynd i'r afael â phob tasg yn gwneud gwahaniaeth mawr.

E-bostiwch os gallwch chi helpu: info@croesoteifi.org

Ac mae angen cyrraedd carreg filltir ariannol arall i gynnal dau deulu.

Mae angen £18,000 i gyd. Mwy os bydd yr ail deulu’n un estynedig.

Ar ddydd Sadwrn Mehefin 24, rydym yn bwriadu cynnal bore coffi i roi gwybodaeth mewn neuadd eglwys gyda ffilm fach. Nid digwyddiad er mwyn codi fydd hwn, ond i drafod y prosiect, ceisio syniadau ar gyfer gwelliannau a rhannu ein gwybodaeth hyd yn hyn.

Os ydych chi eisiau helpu, wnewch ar bob cyfrif, ond sylwch y gall eich brwdfrydedd eich denu i mewn i wneud llawer o waith. Efallai y byddwch yn magu sgiliau a gwybodaeth mewn meysydd annisgwyl. Gallech redeg ocsiwn neu gael cyfarfod gyda'r Swyddfa Gartref i ddweud wrthynt sut i wneud eu gwaith, neu blygu tocynnau raffl, neu ddysgu am iechyd meddwl, Excel neu Arabeg, neu wrando ar y Koran yn cael ei ganu yn yr heulwen.

Rwy wedi blino o hyd ar ôl fy sifft nos yn hwyr nos Sadwrn lle roedd rhaid i mi wrando ar ychydig o’r gerddoriaeth fwyaf trawiadol yng Nghymru, bwyta cawl, yfed gwin a gwneud pethau na fyddech yn meiddio eu gwneud mewn parti. [Noson Bara Menyn]

Rydym yn rhan o fudiad ehangach, ac yn enwedig yng Nghymru mae timau tebyg i ni yn datblygu cynlluniau tebyg yng Nghaerdydd, Aberystwyth, Abergwaun, Arberth, Hwlffordd. Disgwylir y teulu cyntaf a noddir yn gymunedol yng Nghymru ym mis Mehefin. Maent yn Cwrdiaid, sy’n lleiafrif yn eu gwlad gyda rhai traddodiadau gwych gan gynnwys cydraddoldeb rhwng dynion a menywod.

Os ydych yn teimlo'n ddewr neu wedi diflasu neu heb eich gwerthfawrogi neu yn hael, dewch i'n helpu ni, neidiwch i mewn a nofio; mae’r dŵr yn ffres ond yn hyfryd. Rhannwch ...

Codwr Arian Hwyl, Trefdraeth, adroddiad

Haenau o sgiliau. Sesiwn llawn hwyl ‘sgiliau ar wib’ yn yr achlysur codi arian i Croeso Teifi ddydd Gwener y Groglith. Plentyn yn dangos ffeltio nodwydd; ar y bwrdd nesaf, Claddu Gwyrdd; ar y bwrdd y tu ôl i hwnnw, straeon yn Gymraeg; yna Origami yn cael ei ddangos gan geisiwr lloches; y bwrdd olaf ar yr ochr hon i'r neuadd - dysgu Arabeg gan ferch o Gymru. Bob 20 munud canodd cloch er mwyn i bobl symud i sgiliau gwahanol os dymunent. Hefyd, roedd: datrys gwrthdaro, gwaith coed, gosod stôf goed, straeon o Gymru, a mwy.
Roedd yn arbrawf ac roedd yn gweithio.

Wedyn roedd Swper: Cyw Iâr neu ginio Syria llysieuol gyda selsig a thatws stwnsh ar gyfer y plant. Roedd y reis Pilau wedi’i addurno ag almonau tenau, cennin a chynildeb. Doug Hatton oedd y cogydd arweiniol a gyfunodd liaws o flasau, gyda help Kim ac eraill yn y gegin. Roedd y cig i gyd yn dod o gigyddion lleol, gan gynnwys pentwr o selsig a roddwyd gan Ken Davies o Grymych. Mae ein holl lysiau yn organig a lleol, o Glebelands, Aberteifi / Llandudoch. Rhoddwyd sacheidiau.
Y pwdin oedd baklava llawn dop o gnau drud a roddwyd gan Go Mango yn Aberteifi, gyda mêl, dŵr rhosod, a chynhwysion coeth gwerthfawr eraill, yr hufen yn stiff ac yn euraid gyda saffrwm a fanila go iawn. Nid oedd dim ar ôl ar y diwedd, a’r gwarged yn diflannu cyn golchi’r llestri.
